Install Puck
Windows
Puck runs on 64-bit Windows 10 and 11. Download Puck Setup from https://oberon.gg/download and run it.
The first screen installs Puck for you, with no administrator prompt. Options opens a drawer with:
| Option | What it does |
|---|---|
| Install location | The folder. For you it is %LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\Puck; for everyone, %ProgramFiles%\Puck |
| Install for everyone on this PC | Installs for every user; Windows asks for an administrator |
| Add puck to PATH | Puts the puck command in your terminal, so puck open . opens the current folder |
| Open in Puck in the Explorer menu | Right-click a folder to open it in Puck |
| Desktop shortcut | A shortcut on the desktop. The Start menu entry is always added |
Puck brings its own Git (MinGit, the minimal Git for Windows) in the git folder of the install, so you do not need to install Git. Its license and the offer of its source are GIT-SOURCE-OFFER.txt in the install folder.
When Setup finishes it grows into the welcome steps (Get started).
Running Setup again offers to update, repair, or uninstall the installed copy. Administrators can install the Puck-<version>-x64.msi package directly; see docs/installer.md for its properties.
Uninstall on Windows
Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find Puck, and choose Uninstall. Puck’s own window asks first. Check Also remove my settings, logs, and saved sign-ins to remove them too; otherwise they stay for a later install. Your repositories are never touched.
Linux
Puck needs Git 2.38 or later from your system. Pick one package from https://oberon.gg/download:
| Package | Install | Updates |
|---|---|---|
| AppImage | chmod +x Puck-<version>-x86_64.AppImage, then run it | Puck updates the AppImage itself |
| deb (Debian, Ubuntu) | sudo apt install ./puck_<version>_amd64.deb | Puck tells you when a new version is out; download and install it the same way |
| rpm (Fedora and others) | sudo dnf install ./puck-<version>-1.x86_64.rpm | As the deb |
| pacman (Arch, CachyOS, EndeavourOS, Manjaro) | sudo pacman -U puck-bin-<version>-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst | As the deb |
The AppImage mounts itself with FUSE, which desktop systems have; where it is missing, run it with --appimage-extract-and-run. Each download has a .asc signature and a line in SHA256SUMS; sha256sum -c SHA256SUMS checks the files.
Ubuntu 22.04 has Git 2.34, which is too old. Add the Git maintainers' archive first:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:git-core/ppa
sudo apt update && sudo apt install git
When Git is missing or too old, Puck says so at start and names what it needs.
Uninstall on Linux
sudo apt remove puck, sudo dnf remove puck, or sudo pacman -R puck-bin, or delete the AppImage. Your settings stay in ~/.config/oberon; delete that folder to remove them.
